Winwood, Capaldi, Mason, and Wood met when they jammed together at The Elbow Room, a club in Aston, Birmingham. He cut down on drinking, but his medication caused further complications. The new lineup (Winwood, Capaldi, Wood, Kwaku Baah, Hawkins, Hood) toured America in early 1972 to promote the LP, and their concert at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium on 21 February was recorded in multitrack audio and captured on colour videotape with multiple cameras. Wood also co-wrote several of Traffic’s songs, particularly during the earlier period of the band’s recording career. They began as a psychedelic rock group and diversified their sound through the use of instruments such as keyboards like the Mellotron and harpsichord, sitar, and various reed instruments, and by incorporating jazz and improvisational techniques in their music.
The band toured the US as a trio in late 1968, which led to the following year's release of Traffic's next album, Last Exit, one side of which was recorded live. He played on John Martyn 's Inside Out (1973). The late Chris Wood, born on 24 June 1944, will always be best known as a founding member of Traffic. He was on John Martyn’s 1973 set Inside Out, and worked with Shawn Phillips, Reebop Kwaku Baah, Crawler and others. Wood played with Perfect in 1964 in the band Shades of Blue and with Kellie during 1965–1966 in the band Locomotive. The story of the making of the leather-bound edition of the set can be seen below. His departure went unexplained at the time, even to Capaldi and Wood, but he later said "Because of the way I ended the Spencer Davis Group, I saw no reason why I shouldn't leave Traffic and move on. After the break-up of Blind Faith in 1969, Winwood began working on a solo recording, bringing in Wood and Capaldi to contribute, and the project eventually turned into a new Traffic album, John Barleycorn Must Die, their most successful album yet. Their debut album was Mr. Fantasy, produced by Jimmy Miller, and like the singles, was a hit in the UK but not as big elsewhere, although it did reach number 88 in the US.. The album included a surplus recording from The Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys, "Open Your Heart", and the new tracks featured drummer Roger Hawkins and bassist David Hood, from the Muscle Shoals Sound Studio house band. Wood also co-wrote several of Traffic's songs, particularly during the earlier period of the band's recording career. In Traffic, Wood primarily played flute and saxophone, occasionally contributing keyboards, bass and vocals. Several other co-writes, chiefly with Winwood and Capaldi, included ‘Dear Mr. Fantasy.’ This was before the latter pair became the group’s chief writers as a duo. Self-taught on flute and saxophone, which he began playing at the age of 15, he began to play locally with other Birmingham musicians who would later find international fame in music: Christine Perfect (later Christine McVie), Carl Palmer, Stan Webb, and Mike Kellie. It became the title song of their 1970 album, "John Barleycorn Must Die. Wood and Jacobs married in November 1972, at Kensington Registry Office, when he was 28 and she was 22.. He died of pneumonia, after battles with drink, drugs and depression, on 12 July 1983. At the age of 18, Winwood abandoned the Spencer Davis Group at the height of their popularity and, along with Wood, Capaldi, and Dave Mason, formed Traffic. He then went on to tour the United States with Dr. John, where he met singer Jeanette Jacobs (formerly of the 1960s girl group The Cake). So, you may have to pinch yourself when you hear Traffic by Atlanta-based prog-rockers Faun and a Pan Flute. The late Chris Wood, born on 24 June 1944, will always be best known as a founding member of Traffic.
