Academics
Our instructional program is dedicated to the fundamental objective of fostering the comprehensive growth of our students. We aim to create learning experiences that optimally instill valuable attitudes, knowledge, and skills essential for their spiritual, intellectual, emotional, and physical development.
The Department of Catholic Schools meticulously formulates curriculum guidelines, ensuring uniformity across all elementary schools within the Diocese of Tucson. At St. John, we adhere to these guidelines, meticulously following the stipulations related to specific courses, time allocation, and instructional materials. This commitment extends to compliance with the standards set by the Department of Catholic Schools, the State of Arizona, and the Western Catholic Educational Association.

Grading
Our approach to grading and reporting is grounded in the following principles:
- Individual Uniqueness: Recognizing that each student is distinct in their academic, emotional, physical, spiritual, and social development.
- School Individuality: Acknowledging that each school within the Diocese is unique in its organization, administration, and curriculum.
- Collaborative Education: Emphasizing the partnership between the home and the school in the shared responsibility of educating each child.
- Teacher Accountability: Affirming that teachers bear the responsibility of accurately reporting the progress and achievements of each child to the parents.
- Parental Engagement: Encouraging parents to actively communicate with teachers regarding the progress and achievements of their child.
In cultivating an environment that values individuality, collaboration, and communication, we strive to create a comprehensive approach to grading that supports the holistic development of each student.
Sacramental Preparation
Sacramental preparation is an integral part of our curriculum, conducted through daily catechism in the 3rd, 6th, and 8th grades. The specific focus includes:
- Third Grade: Students are prepared for the Sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion.
- Sixth & Eighth Grades: Students undergo preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation.
These sacraments are celebrated with a Mass in the spring, and parent participation is a vital component of the process. Any student who has not received these sacraments but wishes to do so is encouraged to notify the school office and Campus Minister. Additionally, students who have not received the sacrament of Baptism may choose to receive it, and interested families should contact the St. John the Evangelist Parish office for more information on the process. We are committed to supporting the spiritual journey of our students and their families through these sacramental milestones.
